About Band

ABOUT OUR BAND by Big Canoe Drummer, Jerry Long

I was introduced to Karen about four years ago by her twin sister,, Kat....and no, the story does not go where you think...I was working with Kat, and both girls played guitar, so we got together once a week or so and just played some music. This continued for a couple of months, but then, like out of nowhere, they both just kind of dumped me. ...What's up with that?  So, like, 3 years go by, and one day ,I cross paths with Karen, and shes hangin out with this little guy named Jason Kinnney, who's supposed to be some guitar genius..and I'm like, nice to meet you, or whatever...but what I'm thinkin, is, You think you can just pop in and out of my life when ever you want? I suppose you expect me to welcome you back with open arms don't you?  Man, I mean I had a whole speech worked up and then Karen said the only five words that could have made things right again, she said, "We're looking for a drummer" Well, I have to tell you, normally, I am not Mr. Sensitive, but teared up...and though she still denies it, I think Karen did too. So, one Wendsday evening, in April of 2009, the three of us got together...and it was great.  I loved their arrangements and the three of us had a good chemistry. Plus,  Jason lived just two blocks from me and it made it easy to borrow his lawn mower. We continued to get together over the next couple of months, and in June of this year added Eddie Adams on upright bass. Eddie and Karen were friends and also played together in another band  After just three rehearsals, we played our first gig on July 4th 2009 at River Rock on Shoal Creek, a popular river park near our hometown of Joplin, Mo. We took the name Big Canoe from an early settlers reference to the Missouri River, which they called "The River of the Big Canoes" because of the many Native Americans who used large dugout canoes. We hope you like what you hear. Thanks for listening. Big Canoe

Big Canoe's debut CD "Big Canoe" (to be released in late Oct. or early Nov) was recorded in a big house in a small town.   Produced by Brandon Nivens and Big  Canoe. How to Build a BIG CANOE

IMPORTANT! Read all instructions carefully before attempting to assemble your BIG CANOE.

To build your BIG CANOE, you will need the following tools. One acoustic (rhythm) guitar, one acoustic (lead) guitar, one bass (must be upright), a four piece drum set, and three friends.

1.) Using your four piece drum set, upright bass, and one friend, mix equal portions of drums and bass together to form a cohesive rhythm. (We chose to use an Eddie Adams Bass and Jerry Long Drums mixture) Rhythm can be mixed on a scrap piece of lumber, a flatbed trailer, or piece of beer stained carpet. (NOTE: work quickly, as it only takes a few seconds for rhythm mixture to set).  Once bass and drums are mixed, apply a generous layer of the rhythm mix, this not only provides adhesion and a solid framework for when you add guitars to your BIG CANOE, but will also assure that your BIG CANOE is water tight.

2.) Once the drums and bass have been applied, it is time to add the guitars to your BIG CANOE. Using your acoustic rhythm guitar, and a second friend, carefully apply a nice layer of rhythm guitar over the top of the bass and drum mixture. (We chose Karen Kennedy brand rhythm guitar, as it also comes with a great singing voice.) This added ingredient creates an even stronger bond, adding stability and ensuring that your BIG CANOE steers true, and moves smoothly through the water.

3.) Just one more step, and your BIG CANOE is ready to put into the water and explore what adventures await you downstream. Depending on humidity, your drum, bass, and rhythm guitar mixture should set up in thirty to ninety seconds. Using your third friend, you may apply the second (lead) guitar. This final layer not only determines to the overall design of your BIG CANOE, but also creates a rich luster to your BIG CANOE’s finish. We went with Jason Kinney brand lead guitar, one of the best lead guitar brands in this area.  Jason Kinney lead guitar, also comes with a singing voice that works well with the Karen Kennedy brand and comes with an original song package that includes well thought out lyrics and a variety of impressive guitar licks and progressions, that can be arranged to create a definite style to your BIG CANOE.  Once these steps are complete, your BIG CANOE is ready to go. Over the next several months, these carefully blended ingredients will continue to fuse with one another, forming an even tighter bond and even better BIG CANOE.

Well, that’s it! Your BIG CANOE is now ready to float. With proper care and maintenance, your BIG CANOE will provide you with hundreds of hours of musical fun.  Some of the brands mentioned in this instructional may not be available in some areas. We encourage you to take the time to seek out reputable drum, bass and guitar brands in your area. Have fun, building your own BIG CANOE, and don’t forget to come up with a clever name for your musical boat…because we are BIG CANOE.

Thanks for tying up to our dock.
